FAQs for Potential Teachers

Information for Potential Teachers

1. What is Splash/ESP

Splash is a one day extravaganza where high school students come to the Stanford to take classes taught by Stanford students and community members about anything and everything. The teachers share their passion for that topic and the students learn about something they wouldn’t normally see/do/hear about in their classes. ESP is the Educational Studies Program, the student group that runs Splash. We also plan on running other programs in the future. Sign up for our mailing list for more info.

2. When is Splash?

Splash is held this year on Saturday April 5. Classes are held between 9am-6pm with the exception of 1-2pm lunch break. Your class can last from one to four hours and you can specify when you are available.

3. How much time commitment is there to teaching?

Signing up to teach for Splash is easy: you’re committing to a training session, preparing your class, and then teaching it (although we always appreciate any extra volunteer time you might be able to give us). Basically, the break down is: Your class: 1-4 hours on Saturday, April 5th Teacher Training: 2 hours Preparation time: 1-4 hours (on average) Free Teacher Dinner!: 1-2 hours TOTAL: 5-12 hours

4. Where will my class be held?

All classes will be held on the Stanford Campus, specific rooms TBA.

5. What can I teach?

Our catchphrase is that you can Teach Anything. Now, we don’t really mean that. There are a few ifs, buts, and caveats. Your classes cannot be illegal, nor can you explicitly promote illegal activities (ie: “How to deal drugs 101”). You, should, however, feel free to explore exciting, if provocative territory (ie: “Why People Deal Drugs 101”). Our greatest classes come from teachers sharing their particular passion. For some, thats theoretical math. For others, thats 18th century literature. For still others, its ultimate frisbee. Find something you love, something you care about, and you’ve found a topic to teach.

6. How do I register to teach?

First create an account; then register the class you want to teach.

7. What if I need resources for my class?

If you need a projector for your class, you can request it in your class registration form and we will try to assign you a classroom with a projector. You may also be reimbursed for purchases up to $30 for your class. If you need to spend more then that, contact us.

8. More questions?

Please contact us. We would love to hear your thoughts/comments and help you develop a class or provide you with the resources you need.
