Volunteering for College Admission: Do Ethics Matter? in Splash! Fall 2011
We will be discussing the various ethical controversies surrounding the field of public service and volunteering, especially that related to high school students. We will discuss long term vs. short term service, band aid solutions vs. structural change, the gains of the service recipient, the attitudes and motives of the service provider, and other aspects of service work that require further moral reflection.

Why does society consider volunteering inherently "good?" What are the negative consequences of our service projects, both within our own communities and abroad? How do we find a balance between our motives for performing service projects and their actual outcomes? How can we justify service work abroad in terms of cultural barriers, language proficiency, and community-based development?
