Brief Biographical Sketch:
Gabriel is a freshman almost-physics major at Stanford. While growing up in Davis, CA, he started learning physics with David Macaulay's book The Way Things Work. He picked up the cello and soon afterwards started composing. Gabriel first connected his technical and artistic sides through Hofstadter's book on recursion, Gödel, Escher, Bach. Gabriel watched Inception in theater during a science summer camp and was enthralled to recognize recursion in its music and physics. During his free time, Gabriel reads, runs, and philosophizes. Christopher Nolan's mind-bending 2010 film Inception plays with the idea of dreams made real, and dreams within dreams. The film suggests some ways to adapt physics to the dream world, but do they work? In this class, we question the implications of slowed time, among other ideas in the movie, and we may find answers weirder than the movie itself.
