Brief Biographical Sketch:

My name is Jason Shen, and I serve as the Chief Operating Officer of the Stanford Daily Publishing Corporation. I received a BS in Biology from Stanford in 2008.

In Feb 2007 I helped start a nonprofit called Gumball Capital, which engages students with entrepreneurship for social good through microfinance. I love sharing innovative ideas and getting people excited about making things happen

Ditch the Whiners and Make Things Happen - an essential guide for young social entrepreneurs in Splash! Fall 2009
The bad news: There are ton of big problems out there in the world and within our communities. Global warming, domestic abuse, littering, homelessness, and much more The good news: Even as a teenager, there is a lot you can to do combat these problems and make change as a young social entrepreneur. In this course you'll learn the basics of identifying a problem, creating a team, gathering resources and starting an organization to over the challenges in your community and your world. This course is taught by Jason Shen, co-founder and former executive director of a startup social venture called Gumball Capital and grew it from an idea to an award-winning nationally active nonprofit.


Dominate Your Personal Statement in Splash! Fall 2009
For many students, the scariest thing about the college application process is writing a personal statement. One 500-1000 word essay is supposed to capture your character and show who you TRULY are to college admissions panels. Fortunately, there is a proven method for developing a better personal statement - and it's brought to you by the Stanford Daily. Staff members at the Daily have identified a 10-step program that is designed to identify your strengths, discover cool stories to tell, and structure your essay to impress college admin boards. Jason Shen, '08, is the Chief Operating Officer of the Stanford Daily and the creator of this program and will show you how you can be a stronger applicant by dominating your personal statement.


The Psychology of Personal Change in Splash! Spring 2009
Have you ever struggled to beat procrastination, stick to an exercise plan or diet or kick some bad habits? After this class, you'll never have that problem again. The goal of this course is to really understand how people can effectively eliminate bad habits and/or develops good ones. We’ll discuss the results of insightful psychology research on topics of behavior change and identify what really works. During the class, each student will take the strategies and concepts studied to design, implement and present on their own program of self-change. No prerequisites – except a serious desire to understand human behavior and ACT on that knowledge to achieve personal change.
