Brief Biographical Sketch:

I am a research associate at Stanford University working on nanophotonics and surface physics. My research and related teaching efforts (I co-teach EE17N) are two of my strongest passions, but I do not frequently have an avenue to share other of my passions with young people. In particular I have enjoyed a life long love affair with music in general and jazz and hip hop in particular. Through this love I started the breakdancing club at my undergraduate university, begin DJing (a 8 year effort at this point), and began a rather successful audioblog concerning funk and soul music (and their offspring) called earfuzz.com with some like-minded souls.

Introduction Hip Hop Music Neglecting the Rapper: A Sampler in Splash! Spring 2009
In mass popular culture, hip hop and rap have become largely synonymous. This has frequently been pointed out in the context that rap music does not mention other elements of hip hop culture such as dance, graffiti, and DJing. This course is specifically interested in an introduction to hip hop music from the point of view of the DJ/producer. What defines the hip hop aesthetic? What is sampling and is it necessary? Various stages of hip hop music from the early 80s to today will be explored. The course looks to be equal parts lecture and discussion and will feature extensive use of musical, visual, and video examples.
