Brief Biographical Sketch:
I grew up in Orange County in southern California, where I learned the violin and played a lot of tennis with my brother. I went to college at UCLA, and got a bachelor's degree in Bioengineering in 2008. After that I went to England to spend the next year doing research and traveling a bit as well. In Autumn term 2009 I started a PhD in Bioengineering at Stanford. In addition to music, tennis and traveling I enjoy photography, a great example of the intersection of art and science. When I finish my degree I hope to work in research as well as teach high school science. Past Classes(Look at the class archive for more.)Science of Single Molecules in Splash! Fall 2009
Interactions of molecules are normally studied by mixing billions of molecules together in reactions. But there is a new field emerging that enables the study of single, individual molecules. This could have results ranging from extremely fast and efficient electrical circuits to low-cost sequencing of DNA.
I'll give an overview of some aspects of single molecule science, focusing on recent research. Ample time will be provided for questions and discussions of topics that interest you. There will be a minimum of mathematics; an interest in learning about recent biology/chemistry/physics research is essential.
