Brief Biographical Sketch:

Minh Dan grew up and went to school in Germany until he moved with his family to Los Angeles in 2005. A sophomore at Stanford, he is majoring in Economics. His main academic interests are economics and education, but he enjoys everything related to science and politics/policy. He has participated in and is leading an Alternative Spring Break trip to San Diego focusing on immigration and border issues. This is his third time working with Splash! at Stanford.

In high school, he was on student council, the yearbook staff, and tutored other students. In his free time, he likes to bike, take pictures, and dance the waltz.

Immigration and the Border in Splash! Spring 2009
About 12 million undocumented immigrants are in the US, recent reform proposals have failed in Congress, a militarized border now divides San Diego from Mexico, and more resources are put into the Border Patrol and immigration enforcement. At the same time undocumented immigrants die crossing the deserts and businesses resist stricter workplace enforcement. No matter your position on immigration, in this nation of immigrants, immigration issues can no longer be ignored. We will look at a brief history of immigration, more recent trends in immigration, issues immigrants (legal and illegal) face in the job market, with health care, and when entering the US. We will also look at the current state of immigration policy and potential reform avenues. This class aims to introduce you to some aspects of current Latino immigration that you might not have heard or seen on the news yet; the class will consist of some videos, readings, group discussions, and roleplay games and I will point out some resources for further interests. I will also make every effort to get your questions answered.
