Brief Biographical Sketch:

I teach the Megathrust Earthquakes class for Splash Spring 2010, Fall 2010, Spring 2011, and Fall 2011. Students in my class learn all about the biggest earthquakes in the world and the tsunamis that come with them.

I am a fourth year graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in Stanford's Geophysics department, part of the School of Earth Sciences. I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.S. degree in physics in December 2007. I currently study megathrust earthquakes, slow slip, tremor, and how they're all related. I am especially interested in applications of earthquake research to hazard prediction, warning, and preparation. I love to talk about any of these topics!

Splash students can email me questions at noelb (at) stanford.edu.

Megathrust earthquakes in Splash! Fall 2011
Megathrust earthquakes are the biggest quakes in the world. Come learn about how and where they happen. We'll learn some general stuff about earthquakes, then study the Japan 2011 and Chile 2010 megathrust earthquakes more closely. We'll also learn about tsunamis and why earthquakes cause them. This class will include first hand video of earthquake and tsunami damage.

Megathrust Earthquakes in Splash! Spring 2011
Come learn about megathrust earthquakes, the largest earthquakes in the world! Recent megathrust earthquakes include the the Japan earthquake of March 11, 2011, the Chile earthquake of 2010, and the Sumatra earthquake of 2004. All of these earthquakes also produced destructive tsunamis. We’ll learn about what earthquakes are, how and why the ground shakes, how scientists measure earthquakes, and how earthquakes and tsunamis are related. This class includes first hand photos and videos from earthquake and tsunami damaged areas which may be disturbing. This class is a repeat of the same class offered Spring 2010 and Fall 2010.

This class includes first hand videos from earthquake damaged areas which may be disturbing. This class is a repeat of the same class offered last spring.

Megathrust Earthquakes in Splash! Spring 2010
From Sumatra in 2004 to Chile in 2010, megathrust earthquakes are some of the most destructive on earth. What makes these earthquakes so dangerous? What parts of the world are at risk? What can we do about it? Come learn about subduction zones (the areas of the earth where these earthquakes occur) and some of the physics behind these events. Learn what scientists still don't know about these earthquakes, and how close we are to predicting them. Also includes a brief discussion of tsunamis which accompany these events.
