Brief Biographical Sketch:

Sam King explores the connection between computer science and social change. Many computer science students are interested in making the world a better place, and many nonprofit organizations need programming help, but they don't know how to find each other. As a result, Sam started Code the Change, which helps computer scientists use their skills for social change.

Some of Sam's other CS and social change activities include:
-programming for public health in Cambodia with InSTEDD
-coding interoperability tests for missing persons databases at Google.org
-designing CS1U, an introductory Linux course and making the entire course available online for the world
-creating Musical Mappings, a system for kids to learn musical pitch by playing computer games
-implementing MyNote, a personal health records app to help patients with their medical histories
-making STEM Engine, which helps parents from non-technical backgrounds do science projects with their kids

Making Sense of a Complicated World: Ethical Philosophy and Decision Making in Splash! Spring 2012
"What should I do?" may sound like a simple question, but embedded within it is all of ethical philosophy. The corollary to this is that if you truly understand your place in the world and what you should do, then most other questions are easy to answer. This course will connect the decisions that we make every day to ethical philosophy and explore the broader implications of it. There are no prerequisites, and anyone who is interested in living their life intentionally is encouraged to attend.

Computer Science and Social Change in Splash! Fall 2011
There is a myth that if you're interested in helping people or social change, you should get good at political science or be a doctor. Those are both perfectly good routes for social change, but people interested in computer science can make the world a better place also! In this course, the founder of Code the Change will be talking about different opportunities to use computer science skills for social change. This course will not assume a technical background, so if you don't have any computer science experience, you can still learn in this course.
