B7223: Biologist love math too! Mental math and the Origin of Life in Splash Spring 2019 (May. 04 - 05, 2019)
How many bacteria can fit inside a single human cell? How fast can DNA replicate? How likely is it that random chemical processes led to the development of life? In this fun, interactive lecture, we will give students an intuition for orders of magnitude in biology. We will then apply this mental toolkit to the most interesting question in science: the origin of life and of species. Students will have a chance to think fast! and apply what they learned in several “Guess that (size/speed/number)!” quiz games with prizes.
