Brief Biographical Sketch:
Heyo, I'm an LA native trying to keep things real. I did my undergrad at Cornell where I majored in stats. And now I'm a 3rd year PhD student in Genetics. Except I joined a lab in Structural Biology. That actually studies immunology. Where I actually study human reproduction. I know a bit of everything. With all of my spare time and disposable income, I'm cooking. Internationally and ambitiously. Canard à l'orange. Lammingtons. Twice cooked pork. Merguez tagine. Colorful alfajores. Vegetable nimono. Coda alla vaccinara. Maple custard pie. Beef rendang. I probably would've taught a cooking class here if I didn't have to pay for all the ingredients. AMA, I don't bite. B) Past Classes(Clicking a class title will bring you to the course's section of the corresponding course catalog)M5159: Why your intuition is WRONG in Splash Fall 2016 (Dec. 03 - 04, 2016)
Have you ever thought about why your intuition is completely off about numbers? Why casinos still bring in chumps? Why banks ruin the economy every now and then?
Come to this class and we'll have some really cool math puzzles that almost everyone will get wrong! Then we'll use probability to show the deceptive but correct answer. We'll then discuss why we may have had the wrong answers, and what the implications of this may be by taking examples from psychology and economics.
We'll be discussing some (probably not all!) topics from the following:
- random and pseudorandom numbers
- the Monty Hall problem
- Bayes theorem
- probability of sequences
- numerical cognition
- the Taleb "distribution" (why humans shouldn't be in charge of banks)
