V2966: Rapping with Beethoven: Classical Music in a Pop Culture World in Splash! Spring 2013 (Apr. 13 - 14, 2013)
Classical music = music written by dead guys, right? Perhaps. But classical music has gotten a bit of a bad rap (no pun intended). Even if you don't particularly care for classical music, chances are that you're exposed to it more often than you realize. In this class, we'll explore classical music that you might come across in your everyday lives. You'll hear examples of classical music sampled in contemporary pop, rock, and rap songs, used in movies, and played in TV commercials. You'll learn the name of that piece they always play in epic slow-motion battle scenes. You'll discover which Beethoven classic makes an appearance in a rap song from the last decade. And just maybe, you'll come away thinking that classical music is pretty cool after all!

P1670: Green Lantern? Green Flames. Electronic Transitions and Radiation in Splash! Fall 2011 (Oct. 29 - 30, 2011)
In this class, we will learn why different metal salts burn different colors. For instance, potassium chloride burns purple while cupric sulfate burns green. The demonstration will be used as motivation to explain the chemical principles behind electronic transition of various metals, and to provide a brief summary of the electromagnetic spectrum, fluorescence, electronic states in a lattice, and atomic orbital theory.
