M5164: The Science Behind Weather Forecasts: Introduction to Numerical Methods in Splash Fall 2016 (Dec. 03 - 04, 2016)
Forecasts are made by solving the mathematical equations which represent the physical laws of the atmosphere. These predictions on made on a grid of points analogous to different geographical locations. We know that large numerical predictions like weather forecasts are done on powerful computers, or 'supercomputers', but what really goes on in these computations? In this class, you will learn about the underlying 'schemes' scientists use to solve these equations and how they are interpreted by a computer to solve equations that govern our world. Each individual in the class will act as grid point in the computation, performing the tasks of processor. You'll be sure to get a new found appreciation for modern computers!
