“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed” - Martin Luther King, Jr. Especially in periods of political and cultural upheaval, the importance and power of the written word is undeniable. In the 21st century, how do we conceptualize and engage with ideas of race, ethnicity, and social justice? How can writing, as an artistic and expressive medium, elevate and center the voices of historically marginalized communities? In this workshop, students will engage with concepts of race and social justice through a seminar and discussion format, and will then be able to explore these concepts through interactive creative writing exercises.
