M5105: MLx: Modern Topics in Machine Learning in Splash Fall 2016 (Dec. 03 - 04, 2016)
This course is a companion to "Learning from Data". Students should be familiar with some of the formalisms of machine learning prior to enrolling (we will provide rapid review). In this course, we will give examples and dig deep into cool, recent machine learning and deep learning models that give great performance on standard datasets (ImageNet/MNIST/etc.) and have awesome applications to problems like speech recognition and image detection. We will additional modern (2016) topics as time permits.

B4552: Unpacking Ebola: Big Data, Epidemiology, and Pathogenesis in Splash Fall 2015 (Nov. 07 - 08, 2015)
The 2013-2015 Ebola epidemic constituted a global health crisis. In this class, we will cover how big data and bioinformatics revolutionized epidemiological and pathological research during the recent Ebola crisis. We will examine primary literature published in high-impact journals as we consider the pathology and spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Finally, we will briefly review recent research on Ebola drugs and vaccinology.
